4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons salt
1 1/2 teaspoon sugar
1 packet (2 1/4 teaspoons) active dry yeast
1 1/4 cup warm water (110-115 degrees F)
3 tablespoons shortening
PREPARATION
Add yeast and sugar in 1/2 cup water; let it rise until it bubbles.
Mix flour, water, salt, shortening and yeast mixture.
Knead until smooth.
Put in a greased bowl and cover with clean, damp dishtowel.
Rest dough in a war spot until it doubles in size.
Punch down the dough and turn t onto a wooden cutting board or on a counter lightly dusted with flour to prevent sticking.
Dust hands lightly with flour before shaping dough.
FOR LOAVES
Shape dough into loaves and put them immediately greased bread pans. Let rise until they double in size.
Bake at 375 degrees for 40 to 50 minutes, depending on size.
When golden crust forms, the loaves are done.
FOR BREAKSTICKS
Pull off a small handful of dough. Using your hands, roll the dough into a tube shape about 12 x 12 inches and place on a greased baking sheet.
Bake at 375 degrees for 15-20 minutes.
Lightly spray or sprinkle water o breadsticks a couple of times during baking for crispy golden crusts.
FOR FRIED BREAD TREATS
Roll dough into a thin layer; cut into 2×3 inch squares.
Let rise a bit. Drop squares into skillet or deep fryer of hot liquid lard or vegetable shortening,
Treats are done when golden and centers are puffy.
Remove and let rest on paper towels or baker’s rack.
Dust lightly with sugar; they also good filled with cream cheese and jelly.
